Thailand is a country that is rich in natural resources. It is the only country in the Indo-china region that has remained independent throughout the history while all its neighboring countries were colonized by either the British, French or Dutch. Thai arts, craft and culture are built on its solid tradition, which makes them so unique. From all the different geographical landscapes from mountain to the sea, agricultural to fishery, folk to Thai classical dance, Buddhism to tradition, these aspects reflect Thai people’s way of living with culture and creativity. With skills having been passed on for generations, from paintings and musical instruments to beautiful silk, silverware, pottery, puppets, Khon masks, model warships, bronzeware, soap carving, sculpture, wood and stone carving, ceramics and much more. However, as the country keeps moving and adapting to the outside world, we accept the international trend and abandon our own culture. There are fewer and fewer family members who are passionate about Thai craft. Younger Thai generations are not interest in this field, leaving the crafters of sixties and seventies to work on without anyone to inherit the deep knowledge and skill of the traditional arts and crafts. While local interest seems low, there is overwhelming interest from foreigners and visitors. Currently, there is no good platform to disseminate and share such arts and crafts skills. Authentic and traditional teaching is not made easily and diverse enough for short-term visitors.
